Portrait of Doris Waelchli Giraud

Background

Throughout her career, Doris Waelchli Giraud accompanied official missions in Switzerland and abroad. She provided translation and mediation in demanding settings, and had the opportunity to meet figures such as Nelson Mandela and Yitzhak Rabin.

Her travels took her to India, Haiti, the Philippines, Costa Rica and Japan, and across Europe and Switzerland, always with the aim of giving practical support where it was needed. Today these experiences feed her painting as much as her cooking.

Painting

For Doris, painting is a space of freedom where colours become emotions. Her work combines intuitive abstraction with inspiration drawn from nature: the warmth of the countries she has travelled through, the Swiss landscapes.

She works with texture, density and layering. The paint is applied in layers, scraped, reworked, and the colour finds its own direction. Some canvases take in a fragment of everyday life, a leaf or a plant; others sketch imaginary interiors.

“I paint the way I cook.”

Painting light

In the series Peindre la lumière (Painting Light), she returns to the landscapes of her travels: deep blues for the sea and movement, oranges and reds for sunsets, impasto for the strength of nature.
